TIL: Redis isn't just a cache

The same process can hold a cache, a queue, a lock, and a session. Those are different contracts.

I used to say “Redis” the way people say “the cache”. In Laravel apps it is often also:

  • the queue backend
  • atomic locks
  • rate limiters
  • sessions

A maxmemory-policy that is acceptable for cached HTML is not acceptable for a lock. Evicting a cache key is a performance issue. Evicting a lock is a correctness issue.
